Barbour heritage jacket

There are few garments as quintessentially British as the Barbour wax jacket. For over a century, this South Shields-born brand has protected country gentlemen, city commuters, and everyone in between from the unpredictable British weather. Here in Wiltshire, where Salisbury Plain meets the rolling downs, a quality outer layer is not a luxury — it is a necessity.

The Barbour Story

Founded in 1894 by John Barbour in South Shields, the company began by supplying oilskins to sailors, fishermen, and dockworkers. By the 1930s, Barbour had developed the waxed cotton jacket that would become its signature — waterproof, windproof, and built to improve with age.

Today, Barbour holds three Royal Warrants and remains one of Britain's most respected heritage brands. At Chas H Baker, we have stocked Barbour for decades, and it remains one of our most requested labels.

Understanding the Barbour Range

The Beaufort

Perhaps the most iconic Barbour jacket. The Beaufort features a classic mid-length cut, corduroy collar, large bellows pockets, and a game pocket across the back. It is the jacket that defines the brand and suits virtually every body type.

The Bedale

A shorter, lighter alternative to the Beaufort. The Bedale is ideal for everyday wear — smart enough for town, rugged enough for the countryside. Its shorter length works particularly well with jeans and chinos.

The Ashby

Barbour's contemporary take on the wax jacket. Slimmer fit, cleaner lines, and a more urban aesthetic. Perfect for the gentleman who wants heritage quality with a modern silhouette.

Caring for Your Wax Jacket

A Barbour jacket is an investment that can last decades with proper care:

  • Sponge clean only — never machine wash
  • Re-wax annually using Barbour Thornproof Dressing
  • Store on a padded hanger in a cool, dry place
  • Allow wet jackets to dry naturally away from direct heat
  • Brush off mud and dirt once dry — never wash while wet

We stock Barbour reproofing kits in store and can advise on the re-waxing process. Many of our customers bring jackets back year after year for reproofing — a testament to the longevity of these remarkable garments.

"A well-maintained Barbour jacket tells the story of its owner — every mark and patina earned through years of faithful service." — Chas H Baker

Beyond Barbour: Other Heritage Outerwear

While Barbour leads our outerwear offering, we also stock a range of complementary heritage pieces:

  • Wool Overcoats: Classic Chesterfield and single-breasted styles for formal winter wear
  • Quilted Jackets: Lightweight warmth from Barbour and other premium brands
  • Tweed Jackets: Perfect for country events and shooting season
  • Technical Outerwear: Modern waterproof jackets for active lifestyles

Layering for Wiltshire Winters

The key to staying comfortable in a Salisbury winter is layering. Start with a merino wool base layer or fine knit jumper, add a shirt or mid-layer, and finish with your outer jacket. This approach allows you to adapt as you move between cold streets and warm shops, pubs, and offices throughout the city.
